The Climate Change Authority is identifying how Australia can reduce fossil methane emissions and maximise near-term climate benefits as part of recommendation 5 in its 2025 Annual Progress Report.

Climateworks Centre welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission to the Climate Change Authority in response to the fossil methane consultation. We thank the Investor Group on Climate Change for providing substantial information to Climateworks in the development of this submission.

Submission summary 

Climateworks recommends that the Climate Change Authority call on the Australian Government to:

• Improve coordination and accountability on methane reduction actions across government to reduce emissions, implement the Resources sector plan and achieve the Future Made in Australia agenda.
• Strengthen measures focused on methane reduction designed to complement the Safeguard Mechanism and Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) methods.
• Introduce additional reporting of methane using 20-year Global Warming Potential (GWP) values to improve transparency on its short-term impact.
