The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has published a discussion paper as part of the development of Feeding Australia: A National Food Security Strategy, which aims to boost the productivity, resilience and security of our food system.
Climateworks has engaged with DAFF and the National Farmers Federation in supporting frameworks such as the Australian Agriculture Sustainability Framework (AASF).
For the past five years, Climateworks has been an active member of the AASF Community of Practice, contributing to the development of sustainability indicators and approaches that align with climate and environmental objectives.
We welcome the opportunity to build on this collaboration through our input into the scope of the National Food Security Strategy.
This is especially urgent given the window to keep global warming within 1.5 degrees is still open, but narrowing.
Submission summary
Climateworks recommends that the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry:
- Develop a food system strategy that will support the transition to net zero, meet national biodiversity goals and maintain a thriving agricultural industry.
- Develop a whole-of-food system strategy that addresses what Australia chooses to produce and global demand for sustainable food products.
- Prioritise integrated land-use planning to minimise conflicts and realise synergies between food production and demand for key biofuel feedstocks.
- Establish a food council that is fit for a whole-of-food system strategy.
