Australia’s Strategy for Nature is our National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). It has been updated following Australia’s adoption of the landmark 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Feedback was invited on the implementation plan for Australia’s Strategy for Nature 2024–2030. The plan will guide how governments, communities, businesses and individuals can work together to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
Climateworks commend the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for preparing a plan to guide whole-of-society and whole-of-government action to support Australia’s achievement of its Biodiversity Goals aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework.
Climateworks Centre:
- Strongly supports ambition in Australia’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
- Strongly supports the Strategy’s focus on equitable representation and Traditional Knowledge.
- Supports the Strategy’s ambition to mainstream nature into government and business decision-making. We recommend the implementation plan: a) promote uptake of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and, b) accelerate mechanisms such as the Nature Repair Market to unlock private sector finance for biodiversity restoration and protection.
- Supports the Strategy’s commitment to robust monitoring, evaluation and reporting aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework. It will be critical to invest in interoperable, transparent and scalable data systems that enable cross-sector decision-making and track progress toward nature-positive and climate-resilient outcomes.
- Recommends the creation of an integrated plan that clearly shows specific actions in line with the government’s objectives across multiple strategies and Australia’s international commitments: a) Delivering on these commitments will be challenging, balancing growing demands for food, fibre and energy with the need to protect and restore ecosystems. b) A well-designed implementation plan can navigate these complexities, coordinate and enable adaptation while advancing climate and biodiversity goals.
